It’s been a couple months! I am back home from Athens and preparing for my trip to the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine for a summer workshop. I leave Wednesday afternoon to see a few friends in Boston before heading to Maine. I got my fabric for the workshop Sunday, even though I’d nearly given up on being able to….noticing a pattern of me giving up on things too early. Where is my sense of faith?
Anyway, I have this story called verdant(that I have not yet completed drawing) in this comics anthology with other queer Black cartoonists called We Belong. We’re fundraising until September 15th. Please share with anyone who might be interested!! It’s my first time having a story in an anthology, and I’m elated but also HAVE NOT YET COMPLETED MY COMIC. I can’t tell why I’m having such a hard time facing my own story. Is it that I don’t want to dwell on love? Or make up a magic system? Or draw at all. I have a little less than one month. I hope traveling shakes something loose in me so my art can flow again-or flow at all.
made this lil comic to apply to a zine I never heard back from. YAY!!
In other news, I’m likely moving to Seattle this October!! Still don’t have the details from the program I’m doing to plan important things (like where to live and exactly where I will work) so I’m trying to focus on what’s right in front of me. Like the Haystack Fellowship and the We Belong anthology. Also being part of the Portland Zine Symposium in the fall!!
Deep breaths.

Barbie dir. Greta Gerwig – I went to the movie with my sisters and cousin and my older sister’s husband. A lovely theatrical experience!! but disappointing overall. Maybe I expected too much? Theme-wise. Anyway of course the heteropatriarchy is more multifaceted than a movie about stereotypical Barbie can encompass. The chorus to Push by Matchbox 20 keeps playing in my head bc of the Kens and I love it.
Datura Zine curated by sunmiflowers – Haven’t read any of the stories in this yet, but I know it’s going to be everything I need and more. Rosemary Valero-O’Connell and Mar Julia have stories in here and I’ve loved their work for years. Indie presses 4ever!!! I think preorders are still open if y’all are interested.
Puppy Love dir. idk and I’m not looking it up – THE FLASH IS IN THIS ROMCOM abt dogs. I love Grant Gustin in anything!! Lucy Hale is there too, lol. This movie is ok, pretty funny and cute with solid romcom elements including the white leads having underdeveloped characters of color as their best friends. AND it perpetuates the myth the COVID is over when it’s still highly transmissible!! The dogs are extremely cute tho. Plus, it’s set in Seattle, which I am taking as a good sign.
